Making the world more resilient and sustainable is an urgent, yet complex task. Our global community is struggling with climate change, pollution and degradation of ecosystems, and increasing economic and social inequality. What does it take to organise, manage, and lead socio-technical change towards solving these global challenges? How can we keep our economy viable without exceeding the carrying capacity of ecosystems and infrastructures? That’s what the Master’s in Environmental & Energy Management (MEEM) is all about.

This one-year, English-taught Master’s, offered in Leeuwarden, will help you become a change agent at the interface between social, technological, and ecological systems. With a focus on social science disciplines such as management, public policy, governance, and law, you will learn to tackle challenges in the field of energy, water, and environmental management. This Master’s covers themes like sustainable development, resilience, circular economy, social entrepreneurship, environmental quality, and technological innovation – from the perspective of both developed and developing countries.

A relatively small Master’s programme with a low student-teacher ratio, we offer an informal atmosphere in combination with a strong commitment and educational methods geared to your professional as well as your personal growth. Our strong international profile – with students from some 40 countries having graduated since we began in 2000 – will uniquely prepare you for an international, cross-cultural, cross-disciplinary career. On graduation, you will receive a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Environmental and Energy Management with a diploma supplement mentioning your specialization in Environmental Management, Energy Management or Water Governance.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

A majority of our graduates (just under 40%) get a job with governmental or non-governmental organizations. For instance, they may play a pivotal role within a municipal, provincial, national or international water, energy or environmental authority. Many graduates also join a large company, a non-governmental organization (NGO) or an educational organization, or carve out a career at a consultancy firm or a research centre.
