Aalborg is a modern city in Northern Denmark with over 118,000 inhabitants. The waterfront area, once the city's industrial heart, has been transformed into a vibrant cultural district with world-class architecture, restaurants, shopping, and student housing. You may not need to take IELTS or TOEFL. University usually allow you to prove your English proficiency in one of the following ways:
- English Language Hours – The total number of English language hours completed in Grades 10, 11 and 12 should be at least 210 hours.

- A Cambridge English qualification
- A national English examination listed on your secondary school leaving certificate

Finding your home in Aalborg
Aalborg Municipality offers a Housing Guarantee for students who apply through Studiebolig Aalborg. This means you can secure a place to live before you even arrive in Denmark. Studiebolig Aalborg is the main housing portal for students in the city, bringing together accommodation from several providers across Aalborg.
On-campus housing is not available in Denmark, so all students arrange their own accommodation. But with the Housing Guarantee and UCN's International Office ready to help, finding a home in Aalborg is straightforward.
Your housing options
Studiebolig Aalborg (recommended) - the main student housing platform. Offers dormitory rooms and apartments (1-4 rooms). Dormitories have shared kitchens and bathrooms; apartments have private facilities. Apply online, add options to your wish list, and the more you add, the greater your chances. Application is free.
Private accommodation - search through websites like boligportal.dk, boinord.dk, or Studiebolig Aalborg's private accommodation service. Always contact UCN's International Office at international@ucn.dk before signing any rental agreement if you are unsure.
Startup Housing - if you arrive without permanent housing, Aalborg Municipality offers temporary startup housing for eligible students. This gives you a roof over your head while you search for permanent accommodation.
Rent and practical details
- Student accommodation: typically 3,000-5,000 DKK per month
- Security deposit: usually 3 months rent (refunded when you move out)
- Most rooms are unfurnished - buy affordable furniture at IKEA, Jysk, or second-hand shops
- Rent may or may not include heating, water, electricity, and internet - always check your contract
- Never pay rent or deposit to a bank account outside Denmark
Remember: if you work at least 10-12 hours per week, you qualify for the Danish SU grant (approximately 7,426 DKK/month before tax), which easily covers rent and living expenses in Aalborg.
