Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy (MIRT)

In this programme, you will learn everything about medical imaging in radio-diagnostics, radiotherapy, ultrasound and nuclear medicine.
The bachelor’s programme Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy (MIRT) is a 4-year, full-time programme. In these 4 years, you’ll learn how to use medical equipment in order to prepare, execute and process visual imaging research and treatment. You’ll be trained as the professional link between technology, safety and patient care. The programme covers how the human body functions, which examination you can perform when presented with a clinical case, which equipment you should use for diagnoses or treatments and how these devices work. We’ll teach you the effects of radiation and radioactivity on the human body and how you can protect yourself and your patient against these effects.

What are you going to learn?
You will learn to use medical equipment to prepare, perform and process imaging studies and treatments. You are a link between technology, safety and patient care. You will learn how the human body works, which examinations go with which disease, which equipment is needed and how this equipment works.
You learn:
- All about radiation and radioactivity and how to protect yourself against it.
- Working with advanced equipment for medical imaging.
- Combination of theory and practice: learning by doing.
Knowledge of Physics is recommended and knowledge of Mathematics is required in all cases.
You have to be competent in: mental arithmetic, algebra, rearranging formula’s, exponentials, converting units, trigonometry, reading and plotting graphs on logarithmic paper.
The MIRT programme at Fontys University of Applied Sciences will prepare you for the profession of medical imaging and radiotherapy expert (diagnostic and therapeutic radiographer). Due to variation in the legislation and regulations of different countries concerning operating medical devices that deliver (ionising) radiation, additional work experience or other proof of skill could be required in your country of origin.
