Combine the study of cognition, language and communication to learn which factors determine whether communication will be successful. Integrate knowledge of form, process, and psychological aspects to contribute to the optimization of communication in a wide variety of contexts; both online and offline. This is a track of the MSc Communication and Information Sciences.

Learn how people process textual, visual, verbal, and nonverbal information, and how to translate that knowledge into do's and don'ts for effective communication.

Within Communication and Cognition, you learn how people process textual, visual, verbal, and nonverbal information, and how to translate that knowledge into do's and don'ts for effective communication.

  • Gain a fundamental comprehension of how communication works, and the cognitive processes involved.
  • Deepen your understanding of:

       -  how our processing of information is affected by, for example, the structure, content, and style of a message.
        - the interaction between verbal and visual communication and how to optimally combine the two.
        - interpersonal communication and the role and influence of emotions and non-verbal behavior.
        - social implications of language technology such as the use of chatbots.

  • Benefit from the freedom to choose from a wide range of electives.
  • Consider applying for the two-year Dual degree program with Wirtschaftsuniversität Vienna, focusing on business communication with special emphasis on digital and intercultural communication. A scholarship covers part of the tuition.
Entry qualification
  • ECTS transcript – If you are still completing your Bachelor’s degree, upload an ECTS transcript showing the subjects you have studied, your grades, and the number of credits awarded. Your Bachelor’s diploma must be uploaded later, as soon as you receive it.
  • Bachelor’s diploma – If you have already graduated, upload your Bachelor’s diploma. A separate ECTS transcript is not required.

Note: Your Bachelor’s degree must be in the same or a related field as the Master’s programme you are applying for. The university will check whether you have completed enough relevant subjects and ECTS credits.

English language requirements

Applicants have to prove their English language skills either by an internationally recognized language test or upon previous studies. Usually English language skills can be proved by the following documents: 

  • TOEFL iBT*
  • IELTS Academic
  • A Cambridge English qualification
  • Higher education degree completed in English
  • Secondary education completed in English in a country or school qualification accepted by the university
  • An English subject and grade on your secondary school leaving certificate that meet the university’s requirements
  • Other

Important requirements

You are certainly eligible to apply if you have a Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, such as general Communication Studies, Linguistics, or a modern language.

However, the academic background of the students in our Master's program varies a lot. Students with a Bachelor's degree in a different subject area are also most welcome to apply.

  • A copy of your Bachelor's or Master's thesis or an essay completed during your studies (only in English and at least 1500 words; if you have not yet written a thesis, you could also upload a dedicated writing sample in form of an academic essay or research proposal)

Career prospects

Upon graduating you will have obtained the following title (as stated on your diploma): MSc Communication and Information Sciences, Communication and Cognition.

As a Master of Science with a specialization in Communication and Cognition you are able to conduct research on the transfer of information through textual and non-verbal communication. Moreover, you will be capable of advising people about writing a clear, attractive and convincing text according to various communication objectives.
