Modern society depends on reliable and efficient electronics supporting a wide range of application areas such as broadband communications, high-speed computing, healthcare, automotive, artificial intelligence (AI), the internet of things (IoT), and more. This means that the demand for engineers with the knowledge required to lead the design of complex integrated circuits and systems will remain high for the foreseeable future.

This programme is organised by several strong divisions with excellent teaching experience and close research collaboration with many companies worldwide. It provides you with a competitive education in digital, analogue and radio-frequency (RF) integrated circuits (IC) and system-on-chip (SoC) design, combined with in-depth knowledge in signal processing, application-specific processors, embedded systems design, modern communications systems, and radio transceiver design.

Two specialisations

During the second and third semester it is compulsory for the student to follow one of the two specializations:

  • Embedded digital systems with focus on digital system-on-chip design and embedded systems
  • Microelectronics with emphasis on design of mixed analog/digital and radio-frequency integrated circuits

Project-based design courses using advanced CAD tools

Several project-based design courses provide excellent opportunities to strengthen your practical design skills. You will gain hands-on experience with state-of-the-art circuit and system design environments, as well as advanced CAD tools widely used in today’s industry. As an example, in the VLSI Design course, you will design real chips using standard CMOS technology. These chips are then sent for fabrication and later measured and evaluated in a follow-up course. Only a few select universities worldwide have the know-how and capability to provide such unique courses, and LiU is one of them.

Important requirements

Selection will be based on academic merits.

Other requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or equivalent.
  • 20 ECTS credits in mathematics/applied mathematics and/or applications of mathematics, including linear algebra and transform methods.
Our graduates can expect excellent career opportunities in major research and development centres, both in the industry and in academic institutions worldwide. You will be specifically trained and qualified to work as an IC design engineer in major semiconductor, IC and telecom companies. You will also be well prepared for further studies towards a doctoral degree.
