Develop your own signature in our challenging programme
Dance Arts in Context is a broad programme that challenges you artistically, physically, and theoretically. You create your own learning path in a supportive environment, encouraging you to explore and experiment. This results in diverse dancers with their own unique styles.
Year 1: The two specializations Contemporary and Contemporary Urban share the same basics but differ in elaboration. Basic programme: Weekly classes in Ballet, Contemporary, Modern, Improvisation, Performance Studies, Creation, Movement Research, Yoga, Pilates, Choreography, History, Dramaturgy, Communication and Anatomy. Projects are workshops with guest choreographers, creating own work, interdisciplinary and public space projects.
Year 2: Specific to Contemporary: extra classes in Contemporary, improvisation, and Butoh. Specific to Contemporary Urban: Weekly classes in Urban dance as created in the 1980s in the American urban subculture. This includes Hiphop (popping, locking, B-boying, and house) and Authentic Jazz. In addition, the course offers non-European urban styles such as Contemporary African dance and fusion techniques such as Physical Dynamics.
Year 3: In addition to training in your choice of ballet, urban, contemporary or embodied based practices, you work on projects with the field. You choose from the extensive range of courses. You choose which project you want to do when and where. After completing your second year, you have the option to choose the graduate profile Choreography.
Year 4: To graduate in Dance Arts in Context, you need a six-month internship. You can join dance companies or small productions, at home or abroad, or intern at an educational institution abroad. As a Choreography graduate, you create five choreographies. For your final choreography, you work with professional dancers outside Fontys Academy of the Arts. You also research a dance company or choreographer of your choice.
