Youth Work and Community Wellbeing – support young people and strengthen communities
Want to help young people discover their strengths and take an active part in community life? You will learn to work with people, support their wellbeing and design inclusive activities. Humak also uses the name Wellbeing and the Futures of Youth and Community Work for this programme.
What will you learn?
Understand human development, communities and the principles of youth work.
Use experiential learning methods to encourage participation, equality and inclusion.
Plan projects, work with organisations and evaluate the impact of activities.
Use research, respond to social change and follow human rights principles.
Support sustainable community wellbeing.
How will you study?
You will apply theory through group assignments, projects, excursions and four placement periods. You can complete placements in Finland or, where opportunities are available, abroad. Your studies will also include summer semesters.
This full-time daytime programme is taught in English in Helsinki, comprises 210 ECTS credits and usually takes 3.5 years to complete. On graduation, you will receive the Community Educator (Bachelor of Humanities) degree.
Learning Finnish is part of the degree
You will also study Finnish during the programme. These language skills are useful for placements and for finding work with local young people and communities in Finland.
Transcript of records – if you are still at school, prepare a transcript showing your current grades. Use the Kastu template and instructions. Check whether your chosen Humak admission route accepts applicants who have not yet graduated: Humak's current public Rolling Admission requires a completed secondary school qualification.
Upper secondary qualification and supporting certificates – if you have already graduated, prepare the qualification that gives you access to higher education, together with any supporting school documents required for your admission route.
You may not need to take IELTS or TOEFL. University usually allow you to prove your English proficiency in one of the following ways:
- TOEFL iBT*
- IELTS Academic
- A Cambridge English qualification
- A national English examination listed on your secondary school leaving certificate
- An English subject and grade on your secondary school leaving certificate that meet the university’s requirements
- Secondary education completed in English in a country or school qualification accepted by the university
- An International Baccalaureate (IB) or European Baccalaureate (EB) diploma
- Other

The programme provides a foundation for youth work, community education and social inclusion. You can look for roles in youth centres, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), community organisations, and education or social innovation projects. Areas of work include:
organising youth activities and participation initiatives;
coordinating community projects;
designing inclusive education and wellbeing activities;
improving how organisations work.
Finnish language skills are important when working with local young people and communities in Finland.
